The
ghetto
salad
is a meal only a raw foodist could love, or at least only someone who
has eliminated all salt, spices, and other
taste stimulants from their diet.
It is simple, tasty, and has but one ingredient: lettuce.
That's right, just lettuce or another leafy green. No tomatoes, no
cucumbers, no dressing.
But when you're eating a good diet, after awhile your taste buds have
changed so much that you can appreciate the subtle yet pleasant flavors
found in many greens. So it's nice sometimes to be able to meet your
body's needs with simple, unprepared foods and actually enjoy it.
I've been traveling through Asia and am often without a kitchen, good
knives, and a blender, all of which make complex salads and
dressings easier to prepare. Frequently, I find myself in an airport on
on
a bus with nothing but the food I can buy.
Here in Thailand, The Royal
Project label is all organic, and generally quite fresh. The Royal
Project even sell lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables at the Chiang
Mai airport in the large quantities raw foodists appreciate, which I
was delighted to discover.
Of course, you can certainly find nasty, tasteless lettuce. If it's not
fresh and it's been sprayed with chemical fertilizers and pesticides,
the ghetto salad might be disgusting.
I created this video because I like to challenge people's perceptions
of what normal eating habits look like. To see some, "normal," raw food
meals of fruit, which provide the majority of calories, check out the
video section.
