On your Savory Raw Dressings and Sauces page, you mentioned that you realized that a heavily-or fruit-only diet could lead to unwanted future consequences. What was it that made you aware of this? Thank you.
Andrew's Answer:
Hi Nancy.
I first want to emphasize that my diet predominates in fruit. I eat more fruit than anyone but a few very athletically-active raw foodists I know, and I certainly don't want to characterize my stance as telling anyone to eat less fruit.
That being said, eating fruit alone without also regularly eating plenty of leafy green vegetables can lead to deficiencies.
Greens provide the minerals and other nutrients necessary for optimal health.
I've never run into any problems in this regard myself because I've never gone long periods without eating greens, but I know several raw foodists who have had trouble after a few years of eating no greens, with some ending up in the hospital.
These people often refer to themselves as fruitarians, or people who only eat fruit, often for moral or taste-preference reasons. I would consider myself a frugivore, like our closest genetic relatives the bonobos, who eat a diet that predominates in fruit but also includes greens.
