Eating Raw On A Budget

Tony's Question: I live alone I am on a fixed budget. I am paid on the first of every month. Do you have any ideas or, like a meal plan that is relatively in-expensive?
Thanks,
Tony
Andrew's Answer:Eating raw doesn't have to bankrupt you.
Here are some suggestions:
1) Bananas have a fairly high calorie/dollar ratio, and are usually the best bet for raw foodists on a budget. Dates are also high up there in terms of calories per dollar, but shipping costs sometimes makes them more expensive.
2) Find a wholesale distributor who will sell to you by the box. It's much cheaper that way.
3) Ask your distributor or grocery store produce guy if they have any "overripe" produce, or for stuff they can't use for other reasons.
When I was in college I sometimes got an entire week's worth of raw fruits and vegetables for between $30 and $60 by simply asking for the stuff they were going to throw away. You're doing them a favor by taking it off their hands. Become a good customer and they'll help you out.
Usually what a distributor considers too ripe to sell to a supermarket I would consider to be perfectly ripe. To each their own.
