Janice's Question About Savory Raw Dressings And Sauces:
Everything about this simple raw vegan fruit and vegetable diet totally jives with me, but I just can't let go of olive oil or avocado on salads!
I just don't know if there is hope for me! The dressings I've tried without oil are not good to me. I need help..or should I just accept where I'm at?
Andrew's Answer:
Hi Janice.
First off, I think the biggest mistake people make when stuck and unsatisfied with their situation is to say they can't do something or that there's no way something will ever work. If you've looked at what scientific studies tell us about how the mind influences the body, you'll realize this is a big mistake.
We tend to get what we expect to get, including our worst assumptions about our future prospects.
I now realize I once perpetuated a running injury like this for the better part of a year. I just kept telling myself and complaining to others that I couldn't run farther than 26 miles because my hips just got too painfully tight. Nothing I tried initially worked, and so I repeated the mantra of my own imperfection to myself until I believed it totally.
It wasn't until much later than I realized what I was doing and changed mental gears. Three months later I discovered a series of stretches that freed me of this limitation. The stretches were there the whole time, but I never saw them. Coincidence?
So first, do yourself a favor and stop expecting to hate every non-oil-based salad dressing. Expect to love them.
The Wonder of Doing Things Differently:People assume going blind, losing the ability to walk, or getting fired will make them miserable, but that's not how it plays out.
Hedonic adaptation is the psychological tendency of humans to return to a relatively stable base level of happiness despite even the most horrendous turns for the worst, following a period of adaptation.
In other words, we tend to start liking where we are well enough, even if we weren't thrilled about getting there.
It's the same thing with dietary change. I've worked with a number of sick coaching clients who hated the idea of "giving up," their favorite foods initially, but four or five months later it didn't bother them anymore, and they loved the raw diet they were eating and how awesome it made them feel.
So my second suggestion is to stop eating fatty stuff with your salads for a few months.
How long have you gone without eating oils and avocados on your salads? You don't say, but my guess is not too long.
Give it a shot and see how you do.
After a few months you make like where you're at.
